About SMILE

While most patients have heard of either LASIK or PRK, most have yet to be introduced to the revolutionary new technique known as SMILE. Short for small incision lenticule extraction, SMILE is an innovative approach to laser refractive surgery. The goal of this treatment is to correct astigmatism and myopia, also called nearsightedness. As a third-generation option for laser vision correction, SMILE builds on the benefits that LASIK and PRK have provided for millions of patients in the past. At Chu Vision Institute, we strive to offer the most up-to-date methods to our many patients throughout the suburbs of Southern Minneapolis. In fact, world-renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Ralph Chu was the first person to perform this treatment in the state of Minnesota. To receive the best possible care from a highly skilled team, contact our office today and schedule your eye exam.

candidates for smile

SMILE is ideal for men and women with slight to severe myopia (nearsightedness) or astigmatism. Those who may have not been LASIK or PRK candidates in the past could potentially benefit from this new technique. During your consultation at our Bloomington, MN office, Dr. Chu will assess the state of your eyes and determine which laser vision correction surgery is right for your needs. If LASIK or PRK are ruled out, SMILE could be an excellent alternative. Patients considering refractive error surgery should be at least 18 years old with a consistent eyeglass prescription.

how is it done?

Before we start your treatment, a member of our team will numb your eyes using anesthetic drops and keep your eyes open and steady using a gentle device. During SMILE, a computer-operated femtosecond laser is used to create a thin, microscopic disc of tissue called a lenticule that rests right beneath the surface of the eye. The lenticule is then removed through a small opening, eliminating the need for a flap. SMILE is not performed on the surface of the eye, which means that your recovery time is often quicker than that of LASIK or PRK. After SMILE surgery, you may experience less dry eye and discomfort throughout your healing period and in the future. SMILE often takes fewer than ten minutes from start to finish and only 30 seconds of laser exposure. The majority of patients can go back to work within 24 hours following their treatment.

results after smile

Many patients could experience some minor itching, burning, or irritation in the eyes following their smile procedure. Individuals may also notice that their eyes water more often or are uncomfortable at times. However, these common symptoms will dissipate in the hours following the treatment. The wonderful thing is that a person's vision often recovers very quickly after SMILE. Since no flap is needed, patients are usually able to resume their normal activities, like swimming, outdoor sports, and more, within the first week after SMILE.
