Farsighted Frustration: Is LASIK an Option for Those Who Can’t See Up Close?

Back to Blog

If you are Farsighted, you know the struggle of dealing with thick glasses. Farsightedness is typically understood to mean you cannot see close up but that you do have “Far Sight.” You probably have a hard time seeing your cell phone, computer or your car’s dashboard without corrective lenses.

Many farsighted people are not aware they don’t have to be stuck behind those “Coke-bottle” glasses forever. Permanent solutions for farsightedness are available right here in the Twin Cities, with the world-renowned vision correction specialists at Chu Vision Institute.

Let’s take a look at some of the most common LASIK questions farsighted patients ask our doctors.

Can you get LASIK if you’re farsighted?

Short answer: Yes!

LASIK has been around for nearly 25 years. And with improving technology, more people are candidates than ever before. Chu Vision Institute has invested in advanced, proven, state-of-the-art LASIK lasers that, when guided by Dr. Chu’s surgical expertise, can easily treat many farsighted prescriptions.

“After LASIK, I can now see better than I could with my glasses and contacts. It's a no-brainer.” Kelly, runner and mom

Is LASIK better for Nearsightedness or Farsightedness?

LASIK is not more effective for nearsightedness or farsightedness. The laser is used to correct “refractive errors” (which cause your bad vision) in the same way for each treatment, but the results are different. When Dr. Chu is treating nearsightedness, the goal is to make the cornea flatter. To treat farsightedness, the surgeon makes the cornea steeper. Regardless of how your eyes are treated, the results from LASIK are permanent and the eye cannot “redevelop” the same refractive error.

“If I had to choose to do it again, I totally would, no regrets or anything, no hesitation.” Tina, sonography student

Can I get LASIK if my prescription is really high or if I have astigmatism?

Some people think if their prescription is too high, or if they have astigmatism, they are stuck in glasses forever. This is simply not the case. With the advances in LASIK technology and the FDA approval of other LASIK-like procedures, we have helped thousands who have tough prescriptions to get out of their glasses and contacts.

To determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK, your care team at Chu Vision Institute will take detailed measurements of your eyes. Depending on these measurements, you may qualify for LASIK or one of our other vision correction procedures, such as the PRK laser procedure or SMILE.

I had great vision until my 40s, and now I’m farsighted and need reading glasses. Can you help me too?

What you are describing is a condition called age-related presbyopia, commonly referred to as “Over-40 Vision.” Typical farsighted individuals have trouble seeing up close due to refractive errors in their cornea, or the surface of the eye. Presbyopia actually affects the lens of the eye.

Once we get wiser in years, the lens of our eye begins to harden, and the muscles that control that lens start to weaken. The result is that our eyes can no longer flex enough to zoom in on objects that are close to us. As presbyopia progresses, we tend to hold objects at arms’ length to read them. Eventually our arms aren’t long enough, and we need reading glasses.

While presbyopia is different from farsightedness, we do offer a number of solutions to help our patients escape reading glasses and bifocals. One of the most popular, Custom Lens Replacement, also prevents the possibility of developing cataracts in the future.
