The team at Chu Vision Institute and Chu Vision Foundation are proud to participate in National Sight Week at our clinic in Bloomington, MN. Taking place from October 18 – 24, 2020, this annual event is organized by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Foundation. Members of the ASCRS are volunteer medical personnel and surgeons who strive to provide quality eye care to communities in need.
During National Sight Week, cataract and refractive specialist Dr. Ralph Chu is joined by participating surgeons across the country to support Operation Sight. This charitable program matches eligible patients with surgeons for cataract surgery. We are honored to provide this life-changing procedure to individuals who need it the most.
About Operation Sight
Cataracts are one of the leading causes of visual impairment and preventable blindness around world. Operation Sight was launched in 2014 to help uninsured and underinsured individuals who cannot afford to get cataract surgery. Through different programs and partnerships, including the Chu Vision Foundation, the ASCRS Foundation happily provides these procedures at no cost.
National Sight Week is a wonderful opportunity for surgeons and other medical professionals to spread awareness of this program and give back to their local communities. As of today, Operation Sight has delivered nearly 4,800 cataract surgeries to patients who otherwise could not afford them! What an amazing accomplishment!
Who qualifies for Operation Sight?
According to the ASCRS Foundation, eligible patients must have an annual household income less than 200% of the national poverty level. Applicants must also lack a form of health insurance that could cover the cataract procedure. It is important for patients to undergo an eye exam to determine if they are a good candidate for cataract surgery.
Operation Sight at Chu Vision Institute
Chu Surgery Center and the Chu Vision Foundation have proudly participated in Operation Sight Week for many years. Dr. Chu and his team love to help change patients’ lives. Vision correction is an amazing gift. And the amazing stories from patients are priceless. This year we are proud to, again, Step Up for Sight!
How to participate
With the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic, many people are suffering from financial distress and loss of health insurance. The need for high-quality eye care has never been greater! If you have a passion for helping others eliminate cataracts and achieve healthy vision, you can volunteer your time or resources to Operation Sight. Here is how you can get involved during National Sight Week in 2020:
-
Eye care providers can volunteer charitable cataract surgery. By offering your clinic, you have the opportunity to remove applications from the Operation Sight waitlist.
-
Do you know a friend or family member in need? Tell them to register with Operation Sight. They may qualify for life-changing surgery to improve their eye health.
-
Former patients of Operation Sight can share a memorable story with a member of the ASCRS Foundation. They can tell your story to showcase the impact of the program.
-
The Chu Vision Foundation is also dedicated to treating preventable blindness. You can learn more about the Chu Vision Foundation or make a donation here.
