Greater Precision with LASAC™, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery

Today, patients want not only a better visual outcome, but also less dependence on distance and reading glasses, says Dr Y. Ralph Chu founder and medical director of Chu Vision Institute and Chu Surgery Center. That is why Chu Vision Institute became one of the first 10 sites in the country to obtain the Victus femtosecond laser, the first femtosecond platform approved for both cataract and corneal flap procedures.

A cataract – the clouding of the lens inside the eye – is common in an aging population. In traditional cataract surgery, the surgeon uses handheld instruments to create incisions to remove the cataract and implant an intraocular lens (IOL) to replace the cloudy natural lens.

“With the Victus platform, we are able to automate some of the steps that we have commonly performed manually”, says Dr. Chu. The Victus platform offers real-time, three-dimensional imaging of the eye to aid in planning and monitoring the operation. “While we have performed thousands of successful cataract surgeries, the Victus platform helps us to improve the procedures to give our patients the best outcomes possible.”

“I think boomers have a different outlook toward aging,” Dr. Chu says. “They want to fight the aging process and try to improve their bodies as they get older. Technology is just trying to improve to keep up with that level of demand. Patients nowadays don’t just want to get rid of their cataracts. They want to get out of their reading glasses and distance glasses. That’s where femtosecond laser technology comes in – for those patients seeking a refractive result, not just a medical result.

“Everything about the Victus platform was designed to give us a greater degree of control and more real-time information during the procedure”, explains Dr. Chu.

“Victus enhances our ability to offer latest, most advanced surgery to our cataract and LASIK patients and give them the results this community has come to expect from us.”
