On account of the amazing advancements in glaucoma management technologies over the past few years, millions of men and women with glaucoma have a very wide range of new options to manage their disease. Most of these treatments fit into the category of MIGS, or minimally invasive glaucoma surgery.
At Chu Vision Institute, we are glad to provide MIGS procedures, as well as numerous other new laser therapies for our Bloomington, MN patients. MIGS techniques are done with minuscule surgical incisions and tools to lessen internal eye pressure to stop or delay more injury to the optical nerve. In addition, MIGS can be done at most stages of glaucoma. They generally have fewer post-procedure complications, and the majority of glaucoma specialists believe they are safer overall than trabeculectomies (traditional glaucoma surgery). Contact our Bloomington, MN practice today to plan your MIGS exam with board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Ralph Chu.
Best Candidates for MIGS
Dr. Chu is highly qualified and experienced in diagnosing and treating glaucoma. When you come in for your consultation, he will perform an eye exam to determine whether you are a good candidate for MIGS or laser treatment. You are a likely candidate if you:
- Are over 18 years old
- Need to manage both glaucoma and cataracts
- Don't have a high risk of serious progression
- Haven't been able to control your internal eye pressure with prescription eye drops
- Are living with mild to moderate glaucoma
Since glaucoma can vary in stage and severity based on each individual, Dr. Chu will design a specialized treatment plan for your specific glaucoma condition.
"Today after years of waiting to get LASIK I took the leap. Terrified as I was, all of the wonderful staff was amazing and kind. Dr. Chu talked me through the whole procedure, which is honestly an outstanding experience. I could not recommend Chu Vision Institute any higher! Perfect 10 :)"- M.B. / Yelp / May 04, 2021
"I had LASIK at Chu Vision last week and couldn’t recommend them highly enough. They provided a great consultation and advised on the best procedure for my eyes. Every detail (large and small) was planned for, and the whole process was very smooth. Best investment I’ve ever made!"- J.M. / Google / Apr 26, 2021
"I had LASIK performed by Dr. Chu and the entire experience was wonderful. All of the staff members were extremely nice and helpful - from the check in person who coordinated my visit to the tech who explained what all of the tests were and why they were needed during my evaluation appointment. Dr. Chu personally has a web call with you a few days before your surgery to ensure you do not have any other questions and are still comfortable with moving forward. The day of the surgery, Dr. Chu checks in with you right before you enter the laser room, performs the surgery himself, and then follows up immediately after by looking at your eyes to ensure everything went well. Chu Institute isn't the cheapest LASIK option, but it is clear why they are viewed as a leader in this field throughout the nation. From the knowledge and professionalism of the staff, to the attention that is received from Dr. Chu himself, to the best and latest technology to ensure the optimal results for your vision, they are worth the little extra. I personally wouldn't want my procedure done through a Groupon on a 10 year old laser system - your eyes are worth more than that."- P.P. / Google / Mar 11, 2021
"I cannot say enough! I got LASIK through Chu Vision and everyone was informative and friendly throughout the entire process. They still answer every question with a smile! 11 out of 10 experience!"- C.F. / Facebook / Feb 11, 2021
"Bare with my lengthy review but if you’re like me, I wanted to know what others true thoughts were and I scoured as many reviews as possible to make sure I was making the best decision for me and my eyes. I am SO, SO thankful for Dr. Chu and Dr. Heckman’s expertise and honesty. I decided it was time to get Lasik and went in for my consultation. From check-in to my latest follow up, everyone at the Chu Vision Institute was friendly, warm, and helpful. Due to some past corneal scarring, Dr. Chu recommended that I get Lasik on one eye and PRK (ASA) on the other. I was extremely nervous about PRK because of the slightly longer recovery time and I really just wanted to wake up and have 20/20 vision like my friends who have had Lasik. The day of my procedure, they made sure I had all my questions and concerns answered before they let me in to have my surgery. That was extremely comforting to me and Dr. Heckman explained why PRK was recommended over Lasik. Simply put, I wouldn’t have had a good outcome if Dr. Chu had performed Lasik on both eyes. Both procedures went well and Dr. Chu confirmed his right decision during the procedure which took all of maybe 10 minutes for both eyes. As instructed, I went home and rested and could literally see 20/20 the next day with my Lasik eye. The PRK eye takes a little longer to heal but can already see better! (I was worried my blurry eye would affect my vision, but it did not). Recovery has been great and will continue to get better in the next few weeks. Now my husband wants to get his eyes done. Chu Vision Institute has exceeded my expectations and I am very happy with my results!"- E.M. / Google / Oct 20, 2020
What To Expect with MIGS
At Chu Vision Institute, our highly knowledgeable ophthalmology team can provide MIGS and laser procedures for our glaucoma patients. After we have decided that someone is a great candidate for MIGS, we can go over each of their available options. We specialize in several MIGS treatments, and each one is carried out via the most advanced technology and tools.
- iStent® – Your surgeon will implant this micro-bypass medical device into your eye to create a new pathway for built-up aqueous fluid. By unclogging the eye's natural drainage system, intraocular pressure is reduced.
- Hydrus Microstent – This tiny, flexible device measuring about the size of an eyelash is placed into a precise location in the Schlemm's canal to expand the eye's fluid channel. This promotes the flow of eye fluid to lower intraocular pressure.
- SLT – With selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), laser light energy is applied to the eye's drainage tissue to promote the flow and circulation of aqueous fluid to help lessen the pressure in the eye.
- ECP – Endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation (ECP) is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a laser to treat the ciliary body of the eye, reducing fluid production as a means to lower intraocular pressure.
Generally, MIGS treatments are conducted as outpatient procedures and are over with fairly quickly. Several MIGS procedures only last about 15 minutes.
Expected Results with MIGS
Since these advanced techniques are minimally invasive, the healing downtime is relatively less compared with traditional glaucoma surgery. Most patients get back to work and their usual activities within several days. After the procedure is complete, we thoroughly detail each patient's aftercare guidelines for taking care of their eyes during the healing process. We also require all MIGS patients to come back for a series of critical follow-up appointments at Chu Vision Institute so we can carefully monitor their internal eye pressure over the course of the healing process.
ADVANCED GLAUCOMA MANAGEMENT
A decade ago, patients experiencing advanced glaucoma only had one option for treatment. However, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery and laser surgeries now allow eye surgeons to conduct a variety of advanced techniques to help patients manage their glaucoma.
