about Refractive Lens Exchange
World-renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Ralph Chu and his remarkable team of eye doctors are delighted to provide RLE (refractive lens exchange) for Bloomington, MN patients. RLE is highly similar to cataract surgery in that the lens of the eye is removed and replaced with a medical-grade intraocular lens, or IOL, to correct or dramatically reduce certain types of refractive problems and allow for sharp vision at varying ranges. RLE can be an excellent treatment option for patients who live with extremely high degrees of myopia or hyperopia and who might not be ideal candidates for more common refractive vision procedures. Another exciting bonus to this surgery is that your new lens will never develop a cataract. Call or visit Chu Vision Institute to plan your eye assessment, and learn if RLE is the best choice for you.
candidates for rle
Generally, refractive lens exchange is most beneficial for patients with severe levels of myopia or hyperopia that aren't able to be addressed using laser refractive procedures. Refractive lens exchange may also be performed for people whose corneas are insufficiently thick for LASIK or other popular types of laser eye surgery. In the days after your first evaluation at Chu Vision Institute to see if you're eligible for RLE, our surgeons will identify the optimal kind of artificial lenses for your unique vision needs. Your artificial IOLs will then be individually custom-made.
Refractive Lens Exchange Reviews
"I have had bad eyes since I was seven years old. Recently I went to my eye Dr. and we came to the conclusion that there was only one option left for me. He set me up with Dr. Chu for lens replacement surgery. It turned out I had cataracts in both eyes. He set me up for surgery and was kind enough to do both eyes back to back. He has surpassed my expectations. It has been just over 24hr. on my left eye, and I can already see better then I had with my contacts or glasses. This has been truly a miracle for me and I am excited to live my life through my new eyes. Thanks so much for what you have done for me."- P.S. / Facebook / Oct 05, 2017
how is it done?
Chu Vision Institute performs refractive lens exchange as an outpatient surgery that generally takes around a quarter-hour. However, if you plan to have RLE for each eye, you should wait at least 5 – 10 days between procedures. Before we begin your RLE procedure, we will apply stingless eye drops to desensitize the eyes and add a mild sedative to ensure your comfort. Dr. Chu will then place an incredibly tiny incision in the corneal tissue and use laser or ultrasound technology to safely disintegrate the lens and suction it away. Next, he will put the customized lens in the eye through the existing, almost microscopic site, which will seal up on its own within a week.
results after rle
After the numbing eye drops start to wear off, you will experience a bit of mild discomfort. This should only last about 48 hours and can be addressed with over-the-counter analgesics. Many people who get RLE begin to experience their new vision in as little as 1 – 4 days and many patients can greatly decrease or do away with their use of corrective eyewear. Over the course of the initial 4 – 12 weeks, you may experience a few instances of hazy vision, glare, and dry eyes off and on. These are considered standard aspects of the adjustment process and shouldn't be any cause to worry. We will arrange a series of necessary follow-up visits during the weeks after your procedure to check on the progress of your recuperation.
Long-Term Clear Vision
Refractive lens exchange at Chu Vision Institute is an advanced elective procedure that would truly improve your eyesight, as well as your overall outlook on life. For people who may not be great candidates for LASIK, LASEK, or PRK, RLE has the potential to reduce or erase the need for corrective lenses and the likelihood of future cataracts.
