Myanmar - Day One - First Impressions
After one day in Yangon, the theme is diversity. Old meets new, ethnic groups form a patchwork of city neighborhoods clustered around different houses of worship, and high rises stand next to buildings that appear to be untouched since British colonial days in the late 19th century. From every place in the city, you can see the golden peak of Schwedagon Pagoda, the main Buddhist temple rising high above the horizon, glimmering day and night.
We are here on official business, as part of an international team of eye care professionals volunteering as faculty at the Myanmar Eye Meeting (MEM). MEM is a training expedition provided for the advancement of the knowledge of local doctors and improvement of health care in #Myanmar. This is the second MEM at Yangon Eye Hospital, one of only four teaching hospitals for ophthalmology in the country of Myanmar.
